Action Against Hunger USA is part of the Action Against Hunger International network. As an independent NGO, Action Against Hunger USA currently manages operations in 8 countries: Kenya, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia and Haiti. Action Against Hunger-USA has over $100 million in programs, and approximately 1,800 permanent staff based in New York City, Washington D.C, Nairobi, and country offices. Summary of Position

The Medical Doctor plays a vital role in providing comprehensive medical care to patients, diagnosing, and treating illnesses, and promoting overall health and well-being. This position requires clinical expertise, a compassionate approach, and effective communication skills. Additionally, he/she will have a critical role in the inpatient management of acute malnutrition cases. It involves providing medical care, overseeing treatment protocols, and ensuring the well-being of patients with acute malnutrition.

Purpose: The purpose of the Medical Doctor position is to deliver high-quality medical care to patients, diagnose and treat medical conditions, collaborate with a multidisciplinary healthcare team, and contribute to the overall improvement of patient outcomes. Furthermore, he/she will deliver comprehensive medical care to patients with acute malnutrition, stabilize their condition, address underlying medical issues, and contribute to their overall recovery and well-being.

Engagement: The Medical Doctor actively engages with patients, their families, and healthcare professionals, fostering effective communication, empathy, and trust. Building strong relationships and collaborating with the healthcare team is essential for delivering personalized, patient-centered care.

Essential Job Functions

  • Patient Care: Conduct comprehensive medical examinations, diagnose conditions, and develop appropriate treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs.
  • Treatment and Procedures: Prescribe and administer medications, perform medical procedures, and provide appropriate interventions to manage acute and chronic medical conditions.
  • Medical Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, including patient histories, examination findings, treatment plans, and progress notes.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other healthcare professionals, including nurses, specialists, and therapists, to coordinate patient care and ensure effective interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about medical conditions, treatment options, preventive measures, and lifestyle modifications to promote optimal health outcomes.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay updated with advancements in medical knowledge, technologies, and treatment modalities through ongoing professional development activities.
  • Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives, adhere to evidence-based practices, and contribute to the enhancement of patient safety and outcomes.
  • Professionalism and Ethics: Demonstrate professionalism, adhere to ethical standards, and maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Collaboration and Referrals: Collaborate with nutritionists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care and timely referrals for specialized services or additional medical interventions, if required.
  • Medical Interventions: Administer appropriate medical interventions, including therapeutic feeding, micronutrient supplementation, fluid management, and medications as needed.

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Professional Experience:

  • Medical degree (MD or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
  • Successful completion of a residency program in the relevant specialty.
  • Clinical experience in a hospital, clinic, or healthcare setting, with a focus on patient care and management.
  • Knowledge of international guidelines and protocols for the management of acute malnutrition.
  • Familiarity with common medical complications and comorbidities associated with acute malnutrition.
